Stump Removal
Stump removal is a labor-intensive task that involves not just eliminating the stump but removing the root ball below the ground. Root balls grow with the tree, growing downward in many directions. Once it’s removed, a very large hole remains in the ground, and the hole can be very large if the tree was large. Furthermore, the root ball can be up to ten times larger than the tree.
Stump Grinding
In addition to removing the root ball, stump grinding employs a commercial grinder that will chop up the stump and the root ball into mulch-size pieces. These stump pieces can be used as mulch. Even though the grinding process may not destroy the whole root ball, the remaining pieces should decay beneath the ground over time. Generally, stump grinding is less labor-intensive and requires less cleanup, making it less expensive than full stump removal.
